With so many current shows about cops and police procedure it is with great interest we heard about this series depicting the early days of detective work and featuring the famous Bow Street Runners. Unlike other series we have mentioned here before this one is not a literary adaptation but it was based on several sources from that time, for instance newspaper reports. Each episode deals with a crime and the efforts of the newly created police force to find the one(s) responsible thus allowing us a view of the Georgian period and the fascinating London’s underworld.

Ian McDiarmid and Iain Glenn play the two magistrates responsible for this police force that was created in the 1750s, an unlikely pair they were, the novelist Henry Fielding and his brother John.
