War & Peace

Who never heard about (or read!) the famous masterpiece by Leo Tolstoy ? Many adaptations were made all over the years, but we mostly remember the 1956 movie with the lovely Audrey Hepburn. This time, French television (France 2) decided to make a mini-series starring Clémence Poésy (Fleur from Harry Potter) as Natasha Rostova and Alessio Boni as Prince Andrej Bolkonsky followed by an international cast since this was a Franco-Italian collaboration and received, as well, the support of other international channels like ZDF (Germany), Channel 2 (England) and R. T. B. F (Belgium).

The 4 episodes were aired last November and the DVD (in English and French) was already released in France, even if it’s temporarily unavailable.

Just a note, if you like the music, it’s composed by Jan A.P. Kaczmarek.

This looks fabulous. I don’t know War and Peace at all. My only experience of it is as a very young girl, with a mini-series on TV. One week it was war, the next week it was peace and my mother only allowed us to watch the peace episodes because she thought the war episodes were too disturbing for us! I look forward to the DVD being available in NZ.

That’s such a funny memory, Dee. ;-) Do you remember which version was?
Each time someone talks about War & Peace I always think about Audrey Hepburn. I saw the movie so many times when I was a teenager!

No, I don’t remember the version. But I’m thinking that I need to track down the Audrey Hepburn movie and see that.

Clemency Poesy also played Mary Queen of Scots, in the miniseries Gunpowder, Plot and Treason.

Hi, just happened to stumble upon this gorgeous webisite! I do not know this film, but there are a couple of adaptions on classical russian literature made for british tv that I think are highly recommendable, Anna Karenina (2000) with Helen McCrory playing Anna, BBC:s Crime and Punishment (2002) with John Simm and ITV:s Doctor Zhivago (2002) with Hans Matheson and Keira Knightley. Would just love to read a discussion about any of them!
