News: Sherlock Holmes & Wuthering Heights

Sometimes we whine that there are no period dramas in sight! Other times it seems we get them in double doses! That’s what happened recently with Arthur Conan Doyle’s character – Sherlock Holmes.

Two movies are being planned with two very different actors cast as the main character. One features Robert Downey Junior as Sherlock Holmes and is directed by Guy Ritchie. It’s supposedly a darker story  – a more adventurous detective with a dangerous side that involves the use of drugs (more than he already did we gather). The other movie is apparently a comedy and will star Sasha Baron-Cohen in the main role and Will Farrell as Watson.

It’s interesting that both projects seem to fall away from the original story. After having watched Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmes a few years back we have some trouble thinking about him as a humourous but we have to confess to be highly curious about both versions and looking forward to report back once we’ve seen them.

Any fans of Wuthering Heights out there? Another double dose as not only one but two productions adapting Brontë’s novel are in the works.

Things change rapidly in Hollywoodland! We had already announced Nathalie Portman’s participation in one of them but it seems she has dropped out and although we are yet to know who will take the female lead role Michael Fassbender has been announced as Heathcliff.

The second production is a 3 part series by ITV and Tom Hardy will take the lead. We already have a Cathy for Hardy’s Heathcliff – the newcomer Katie Riley! Both Heathcliffs seem a bit old for the character written by Emily Brontë but as usual we’re looking forward to see the results…
