After two years we are starting to feel that we covered most of our favourite series and movies, however we know that there’s a lot more out there just waiting to be discovered (by us at least), so our challenge for you today is to ask for your favourite period dramas that we haven’t mentioned here yet. Those buried treasures that you save for a rainy day are the ones we want to hear about!
One of the features we had in our first year of existence was the monthly discussions, we really liked doing those but they only work with well known dramas because half the fun is sharing your opinions and different points of view. So, if enough people suggest the same title we can even do another monthly discussion (if you like them as much as we did of course). In fact we already thought of a first candidate for the a future discussion. The new Emma that is being shown on BBC presently seems like the perfect candidate for a lively discussion. What do you all think?
And we promise to write down all the titles suggested for future reference!
We Want Your Suggestions!

Not sure if you’d put them in the genre period drama but I enjoyed the following movies that I couldn’t find in your movie list:
Ladyhawke – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089457/
Much ado about nothing – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107616/
Into the West – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409572/
ROME – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384766/
that’s all that comes to mind right now…
Anna, I just watched Rome again this past weekend and I have Into the West on my TBS pile. Ladyhawke and Much Ado About Nothing are on my comfort shelf. These are great suggestions!:)
Well…every time I go to do a review, it seems it’s been reviewed by you guys and about half a dozen of your readers already! So, I seem to be behind a lot. :)
The Poirot and Marple series from Agatha Christie’s mysteries. I sure love them, but David Suchet is the best Poirot, and -shoot- I forget her name, but the British version of Jane Marple is the best.
You could have a Thomas Hardy discussion, although the only one I really love is Under the Greenwood Tree.
I know there are a lot of British period piece TV shows that I don’t know well. Brideshead Revisited – the old one has Anthony Andrews. Oh! Speaking of which, The Scarlet Pimpernel is so amazing. Perfectly cast…so wonderful, even better than the book.
Ok, that’s what I’ve got for now. Sorry I’m not more helpful!
:)
The Grand was a little clumsy and annoying at first, but it soon even out and I can say I even enjoyed it. Viewers of that has suggested The House of Eliot and Upstairs, Downstairs. I’ve seen some of the Upstairs, Downstairs, but not all, and none of The House of Eliot. I thought the Pallisers was a good series. A little slow, but over all, enjoyable. Currently, I am watcing Sword of Honour. I hated both Brideshead Revisted. Forgive me if you have already reviewed these, but here are some on my shelf that I don’t recall seeing here:
Gosford Park (I can’t imagine you haven’t review this one already)
Ladies in Lavender
My Life So Far
Victoria & Albert (have you done this one?)
Lorna Doone (starts out rough, but gets better)
Ivanhoe (again, starts out rough)
Tom Jones (wonderful and funny, starring a screaming Samatha Morton)
The Madness of King George
Carrington (Emma Thompson)
Quills
“The Scarlet Pimpernel”
I liked it as well. But, I think Grant and McGovern have little chemistry. It seems a forced at times.
Ugh, I should edit before I press post. Sorry.
how about the two Narnia movies?
Hi all,
Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve only watched Gosford Park, Lady Hawke and the Agatha Christie’s mysteries so I’m writing down the others to add to the WL. I’m really curious about The Scarlet Pimpernel so that might be my next purchase. ;-)
Although it’s old and a bit dated, The First Churchills is an interesting mini-series. I love Pimpernel! Horatio Hornblower, War and Peace and Dr. Zhivago are also good.I will be watching The Man In the Iron Mask soon for the challenge. The various Musketeer movies might suit as well. Anna Karenina is another possibility.
I’d love to do Emma – though it might need to wait till it’s more widely available.
I Capture the Castle, based on Dodie Smith’s novel, might perhaps be of interest?
A lovely little movie with a cast consisting of Romola Garai, Marc Blucas, Rose Byrne, Henry Cavill, Bill Nighy and so on. ^^
I’ve got another suggestion. lol.
Since you have the Inglorious Basterds here I think it might qualify.
Band of Brothers
That’s a miniseries that deeply troubled and touched me when I saw it more than 4 years ago. Ring a bell?
Wow, I’m loving all these ‘date-night’ suggestions. :)
Anna, Band of Brothers is one of my favorite WWII series (Damian Lewis *sigh*) but I’ve seen it a long time ago, just like you. I’ll have to watch it again one of these days.:)
Another suggestion, but I think you guys already did this one? Can’t remember….A Good Woman with Scarlett Johansson and Helen Hunt. Based on Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan.
Better late than never…
I second (at least) all of the above mentioned suggestions! Great series and movies!
And I’d especially like to to a discussion of “Rome”, “Gosford ‘Park”, “Brideshead Revisited” or also “Far From the Madding Crowd”.
And then of course the “Emily of New Moon” series I already mentioned, but I don’t know how widely known that one is. (Or another possibility to do something by my beloved Lucy Maud Montgomery would be the “Anne of Green Gables” series.)
And of course the new Emma! (But I have to get hold of the DVDs first…)
Loved THE HOUSE OF ELIOTT, but where is the final series? Series 3 left too many unsettled things. We were so disappointed. If there going to be a final series? Sure hope so !!!
