It has recently been brought to our attention that there are two different adaptations of Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers in the works. One by director Doug Liman and Warner Bros. and the other by Paul Anderson in 3-D.
The cast for the Anderson movie has been announced just last month and includes some familiar names: Orlando Bloom plays The Duke of Buckingham and James Corden plays his servant Planchet; Matthew Macfadyen, Luke Evans and Ray Stevenson play the three title characters while Logan Lerman plays D’Artagnan; other names mentioned are Christoph Waltz as Cardinal Richelieu, Milla Jovovich as Milady de Winter, Juno Temple as Queen Anne and Mads Mikkelson as Rochefort. The production is planned to start in the Autumn for a summer release in 2011. While every period drama is good news to us, especially with Andrew Davies mentioned as scriptwriter, the fact that Paul Anderson stated that he wanted to give the story a contemporary feel left us a bit worried. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
The Doug Liman movie is also rumoured to be starting production later this year but no cast has been announced yet. Hopefully some more news will come our way soon.

Ah. The Three Musketeers is one of those where the movie is capable of being better than the book. I have some favorite adaptations, and am totally l ooking forward to these!
Ah, such a classic. I, too, am looking forward to these! I’m glad I stumbled across your blog, for I adore period movies.
