Period Drama Challenge

Period Drama Challenge

For some time now, we’ve been talking about hosting a period drama challenge. The three of us participate in several book ones and thought why not take this to another level and organize one around one of our favourite themes.

First of all, this will be an annual challenge starting the 01/07/2009 and ending the 01/07/2010. No need to rush, this is to be enjoyed and, if someone wishes, discussed.

After careful deliberation, we’ve decided to set several levels of difficulty. Each person will select their levels according to the number of movies they want to see during the following year.

1. Just looking (2 movies)

2. Becoming interested (4 movies)

3. Faithful viewer (6 movies)

4. Clearly addicted (8 movies)

5. Undoubtedly obsessed (12 movies)

To make things more interesting, you can choose any of these themes for your challenge. Let us give you an example. Let’s say that Miss X chooses level 5 (12 movies) and decides to go for Kings & Queens and Wars & Revolutions. She simply has to divide those 12 movies between these two themes.

Challenge themes:

- Kings & Queens (central plot around royalty)

- Through the Centuries (1 movie per century)

- Wars & Revolutions (plot set during a war or revolution)

- Bonnets & Hessians (set during the Regency)

- Victorian Mist (set during the Victorian era)

- Maids & Knights (set during the Middle Ages)

- All Over the World (1 movie per country)

If you have any questions, you just need to ask and we’ll answer them as quickly as possible.

Finally, we created a little button for all those who want to use it.

Might I ask some Challenge-related questions here?
- Do Mini-Series (or even series) count, too? (If watched completely, of course)
- Do the movies (or series) have to be seen for the first-time?
- Do children’s movies (or series) count, as long as they are period?
- How far does “Period” go? e.g. is “Jeeves & Wooster” period?

Thanks! :) I’m really looking forward to this challenge. :) (And I already started, haven’t written a review, though, so far.)

1. Mini-series, series, movies,…everything counts.:)
2. Nope, you can choose something you watched already 10 000 times. It’s entirely up to you!
3. Yes, absolutely.
4. We set our limits to WWII (included).

Looking forward to your reviews, Charly! :)

Thanks for answering the questions. :) Great! So basicly everything I had in mind counts. :)
I still haven’t written a review (but I will next week, when my semester’s over), but started a list of “candidates”. :)

I do have one question- just as clarification, when is the beginning date of this challenge and the end date? I saw that it lasts a year but I don’t know how late I am getting here. :)

Alex September 6, 2009 at 1:25 pm

Hi Rebecca! The challenge started the 01/07/2009 and will end the 01/07/2010.:)

I now see that it is clearly marked on the image. Sorry! What a goof I am! Will you be doing this challenge again next year?

Alex September 6, 2009 at 4:40 pm

I really don’t know but I truly hope so, Rebecca. If you want to participate, you’re still on time. We accept new participants until 24h before the end of the challenge.;-)

question:if I’ve seen a movie set during the regency, but not in England, does it still fit the bonnet&hessians? It’s Onegin, set in Russia.
And also,if it’s set during the regency but it features absolutely no women…does it fit B&H?(cause there’s no bonnets where there’s no women :D)

Ana T. September 29, 2009 at 5:54 pm

Hi Maria, yes they both count! ;-)

Charlotte November 5, 2009 at 8:16 pm

What if we do not have a website to do a review or post on? How would you see the reviews?
:)

Ana T November 5, 2009 at 11:17 pm

We would believe your word that you had watched it. :-) We’re highlighting everyone’s first participation so we would ask you to write a review of the first thing you watch so we can post it here on the blog.
